Many London Jews of Celie and Ab’s generation migrated to the leafy suburbs, but their hearts were in the East-End neighbourhoods where they grew up. Ridley Road Market in Dalston was still where the weekly shop took place. This of course isn’t just a Jewish experience. I have friends of Caribbean heritage, for example, whose Mums will make the weekly pilgrimage to Ridley Road today from all over the capital, as its produce is more reliable than their local shops and markets.
My favourite touch in this cartoon is the usually elegant Celie’s pop socks. Those really date the picture to the 70s, I think.
